Cheap Speedo's

I've heard 2-3 good reports on these cheap Indian made speedo's, at 21 quid it might just fit the bill until a real one comes along. See his other items! He seems to specialise in gauges.

Re: Cheap Speedo's

You get what you pay for Ron, it won't last long but if it gets you on the road then it's worth it but don't trust the reading that's if you get one!

Re: Cheap Speedo's

Hi Tim. I've got no intentions of fitting one! I've got a spare NOS WD speedo and a Jaeger pattern in stock and I'd rather pay the £70-£80 to get one of my others overhauled if needs be. But some guys talk about these cheapies as a temporary stop gap until they can find a real one....even if it's for exchange or repair. I'm just passing on what other guys have told me who have tried these £21 items. One guy said his brother clocked him in his car at cruising speed and it was about 2 mph out. (Good enough I think) At least they seem to be the right shape and size. Ron

Re: Cheap Speedo's

I fitted an £18 Indian made speedo on my BSA A65 and it was more accurate than the original item, but they are a different size to smiths speedos and dont look right on military, plus you have to use the correct indian cable.......use a pushbike one untill you get the proper one!

Re: Cheap Speedo's

Don't be so quick to criticise! Those speedo's that I started this thread with are the same shape and size as a Smiths original and even use the same cable. I've just heard from two other guys who have bought one and are satisfied. Apparently the seller has run out and is making another batch.

Far be it for me to recomend something from India. But in this case I thought it worth while. Ron

Re: Cheap Speedo's

If someone has had one of these they may be able to tell me if the bezel comes off.? I would need to adapt it for my purposes if I got one.
Thanks

Richard I've fired off your enquiry to another forum where 1/2 dozen guys have bought them. Ron

Re: Cheap Speedo's

I think one guy at least will email you Richard. But it sounds like the bezel is crimped or rolled into place but looks easy to remove Ron

Re: Cheap Speedo's

Rolled on bezel by the looks of it.

Re: Cheap Speedo's

I bought one to see what it is like. Not on the bike yet but will update you all then.

First I will need to make a replacement bracket as the bolts are at 90 degrees to the original and the speedo cable is centered rather than off-set.

The mount for the light bulb is much longer than in the image and the bulb holder is a push-in plastic unit. It will not look nice. I think it could be modified with another bulb holder and the mounting tube trimmed somewhat.

Re: Cheap Speedo's

As promised, some images. the speedo faces are clearly different

with the units flipped left to right, you can see the mounting points are at 90 degrees to each other and the repro has the cable entry in the center (note how the mounting tube for the light is not that pretty).

there is quite a height difference too

Mounted on the bike with bracket made from some aluminum scrap

The cable inner was too fat to fit so I had to grind it down a bit but the threads matched. The speed dial seems to read about right, but I'll test that later. The needle was steady and did not jump around.

Given how genuine speedos are getting rather pricey (they're getting up to the US$400 mark), well maybe I will leave my genuine one in the workshop and take it out for special occasions only. It would be an easy thing to steal.

Re: Cheap Speedo's

I sent off for one of the T20 60mm speedos. Ordered on the Tuesday it was on the doorstep Friday afternoon, from India ! The bezel prized off relatively easy so I was able to put a copy dial face on that I had made. The pointer is hard to remove but its only glued so a bit of heat made it easier.. It was only an experiment for me for a stopgap replacement. The face sits a little deep for what I wanted, but it spins up ok and seems well built. The attachment for cable is 12mm on this one so would need an adaptor or something for a larger fitting.
