The Spit went from MkI to MkXXIV...all of them different from their predecessors. Maybe the Matchless comparison isn't so odd after all.

THAT MUST MAKE THE WM20"THE HURRICANE" THEN. SLIGHTLY SLOWER, VERY STURDILY CONSTRUCTED AND EASIER TO MAINTAIN AND WORK ON
MUCH LOVED BY GROUND AND AIRCREWS ALIKE.

Sorry Pete, the 16H is the Hurricane. Slightly old-fashioned, descended from the silver Hawkers / silver Inters, able to absorb any amount of punishment and supremely stylish at all times.

The M20's the Dakota...Produced in larger numbers than the others, incredibly reliable and did all of the heavy work....Ian

I think the M20 is the barrage balloon.........pulls well on the way out, but has to be towed back.

I now understand why the early M20 fuel tank is referred to as the 'balloon' tank :-)
