air intake on my carb has had a slot cut into it, any idea why?
The air intake on my WM20 carb has had a dirty great slot cut into it. I've talked to Ron Pier about the matter, and he has no idea as to the reason for it. That was Friday, however, chatting to an old mate this morning with a G3L, his has exactly the same slot. Surely that can't be a coincidence.

one of two things, #1 someone has done that because they could not undo the bellmouth,
#2 demonstration of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, I can't fathom any reason that would benefit anything.

On bikes I've owned with the sidefloat type carb (276 and 289) the orifice in the carb body itself is where excess fuel appears when the float sticks. Perhaps this slot was intended to get petrol away from the carb? In this case dumping dangerously near the mag though! My early 500 Bullet had a rarely seen drip shield to stop this but not all manufacturers fitted one.
