HI
I know there was a change to the pannier rack later in the war but was there a change to the pannier frames as well? i have just been informed there was, but i cant see any difference to earlier or later bikes fitted with racks and frames that are on the internet.
thanks Grahame
Grahame There were different racks made by or for Matchless that had a sliding arrangement rather than the normal wing nut fixings seen on most other racks. The only other difference I can remember is the usual 'war economy' where the brass wing nuts where replaced with smaller steel ones. Likewise the webbing straps and Y straps also reverted from brass to steel buckles. Ron
Thank you Ron
That cleared up that nicely, Im looking for two sets of frames and two racks at the moment, i found someone with what they thought were late war type with the sliders, so i guess these are the matchless ones you mention. Ah well the search continues!
Thanks
Grahame
I think the M20 pannier frames are different from those fitted to the others in that they have an extra dished washer welded on that the pannier platform locking screw locates in,looking at old photos only the M20 seems to have this, its a good idea as it stops the slot opening up,why the others did not have it is not known, perhaps they all made their own frames in house.
