am about to install on my new WM20 steering head bearings.
up no problem, down I do not get out the cup.
this is possibly screwed, you can see at any rate a thread.
(see link)
There is a special plug that screws into the cup. Once fitted you can hammer against it to remove the cup. Made here by Robb Nortier and I have some to sell for him.
Alternatively, if you are going to replace them anyway. You can MIG weld a short piece of rod across the race and hammer it out with that. Do it straight after the welding as the heat will help. Ron
I think the OP means that it looks like the cup is SCREWED into the headstock. Don't know how but looking at the photo I see what he means. If that is the case knocking it out wont work.
The cup is not screwed into the steering head, it is a light press fit...The thread that is visible in the photo is cut into the inside diameter of the bearing cup and is the thread the extractor plug detailed in Rons post screws into...
When screwed in this plug gives 'purchase' for a punch which can be used with a hammer to drift the cup from the steering head...Ian
Hi Dirk..If you are not planning to reuse the cup you are removing, just run a line of arc weld around it...As the weld cools and contracts it will shrink the cup and it will fall out...Ian
Yes, and when it is very stuck (by rust etc.) a large washer works even better as you can weld it all around, allow it to cool and it will shrink even more, Cheers, Michiel
