C Number

Greetings all,

I recently came into possession of a '41 WM20 that is at least 95% complete and mostly just needs a cosmetic restoration.

The engine was professionally rebuilt for the previous owner before he lost interest in the project. I'll be finishing all that with an upgrade to 12V electronics. Yes, I have the original Lucas magdyno and stuff ...

I am looking to find the correct C number for this bike so I can include it in the restoration.

The frame number is WM20 37071.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Re: C Number

WM20 37071 was delivered under contract C7287 (WM20 25001 - 42000) and which was allocated census numbers C4341593 - C4358592.

Deliveries commenced in August 1940 which probably places yours in the early part of 1941.

I calculate that it would have been C4353663

Why 12v electrics by the way ? It's only for the lighting and with a decent headlamp reflector, 6v is fine for normal use...or are you planning on following the Oregon Trail in the dark ?

Re: C Number

you should check these guys - they have LED headlight and tail ligh bulbs. Brighter than 12V regular and a direct replacement.

Re: C Number

Many thanks, Rik!

As per the electrics, I've ordered a Powerdynamo setup to sub in for the stock magdyno. It's a 12V system.

I'll clean up the Lucas magdyno system in case a new owner in the future wants to return it to 100% original. I figure we're just custodians of bikes like this.

Aside from prep and finishing, a lot of the work will be me fabricating replacement fasteners to replace the stock screws and bolts that have been abused over the years. Fiddly work to be sure but something to plink away at.

Amazingly the bike even came with the wartime blackout headlight cover, the original saddlebag racks, and what may be original panniers (not sure on that).

Re: C Number

The Powerdynamo certainly looks like a nice piece of kit but it costs about as much as I've ever paid for an old motorcycle !
