Brass points cover?....

I recently picked up a magneto with a brass points cover which had the remains of a plated finish...

I've examined it closely and compared it to an original steel cover and It conforms exactly in shape, overall dimensions and general appearance...

I can't say I've come across one before but I tend to think it is an original part...

I don't profess to be a pre war expert, so, does anyone know if these were fitted in the 30s or have any information on its provinence?...

It came fitted to a post war magneto, though that doesn't indicate anything ...Ian

Re: Brass points cover?....

I'm no expert either, but I seem to think of 30's bikes with a ring cam and the cover is more like a tiny brass hub cap. Ron

Re: Brass points cover?....

Hello Ian,out of 8 wartime magneto's I have 2 are brass, 6 are steel. If thats the way they left the works I have no way of knowing. Its only when the factory finish wears off that you can tell.Regards Sam.

Use a Magnet.

Re: Brass points cover?....

I bought an old M01 off ebay recently, and it has a brass points cover with what looks like nickel plating.
I have been trying to remove the nickel as it has deteriorated in places.
It is the same dimensions and shape as the pressed steel type
Can't check the Mag year from the ID tag at the moment unfortunately.
Only one I have ever seen.
Cheers Keith
