The TRIUMPH 5SW & 3SW used the same frame and cycle parts except the side stand the only reason I can think of why they used a clamp on type is that the engine is heavier and the welded on lug used on the 3SW could be prone to breaking off ?
Steve did they ever fit the welded on lug to a 3SW? Here is the parts list for contracts C8079 & C7162 which I think is near to the end of production and it shows the clamp on stand. And my 3SW from an earlier contract.
Would your field stand be surplus to your requirements by any chance (for sale)? Ron
Strange one Steve. My own 3SW is from contract C6128 and I never saw any sign of the lug being cut off.
O&M quote C7162 as the last contract for 5000 3SW's and also 143 3H's ??
I can't imagine that the weight difference between a 3SW and 5SW had much significance over the field stand when you consider what they expected the poor little stand to cope with with this lot Ron
You could be right? Our friend Sean's replica has a standard field stand with 'clamp'.
This project was performed with as much research as was possible with the available information and hours of pouring over original photos and scaling up. The stand is holding up under the severe weight......It is as much as I can do to get the thing upright off the stand.....He's ridden it! I wouldn't dare Ron
Stop worrying Ron...How could you possibly be hurt with all that armour plate protecting you... ..Or maybe you are supposed to wear a suit of armour when riding it.... ..
That bike should definitely to be filed in the 'silly ideas' category...Ian
A 5SW seems an odd choice to add all that extra weight, with its lightweight frame and forks a 6S with its sturdier frame and forks,or even a side car machine would be a better choice,I suppose at the time they used whatever was available.
It's not even a 5SW. The bike chosen for the experiment was a 3SW and the whole thing was built inside a week. I have a full write up and pictures of the original. Ron
This 5SW parts list has the clamp type side stand that is why I thought that only this model and not the 3SW used the clamp type,we may never know why they used two types, but I wonder if the electric arc welding area was destroyed when the factory was bombed and the clamp type was a stop gap measure until they were replaced.
Steve we might get accused of counting or even polishing rivets, but to me it's all part of my hobby. Any little snippet of information that any of us thrash out between us is worth it to me. Often I'll revisit a bike to correct a mistake which will then give me another feeling of 'Job Satisfaction'.
