Saw the heading and couldn't help adding my latest triumph tantrum ...
3hw now off building stand and ready to 'rock and roll' ...... errrrrrr no!
Petrol tank leaks from the silly balance pipe fitting !!!!
So a brazing job is in order.
While outside in our winter sun .... discover that my Khaki paint is patchy - or to be more precise, i appear to have missed a few coats on various areas ???
Something very strange with this paint is how it changes color with different light an shade ... bugger !
So to cheer myself up, decided to fit a spare tank, start the engine and have a drive round, bearing in mind the engine ran very well at the start of this rebuild.
Dam things started then abruptly went retarded ?
Checked everything and re-timed it .... restarted nicely, then again went retarded ??????
Made damn sure the Mag pinion wasn't going to slip and, restarted an runs ... hey!
But no ... no oil return ?
Much messing later, including thinking about cutting down a triumph twin pump (don't ask!) .... got it scavenging again..... more on why later.
So its running, slightly retarded and rich and oil is p*****g out everywhere ?
Long story short - i made up some nice THIN gaskets to replace the cornflake-card ones fitted - something is so distorted it 'needs' the thick gasket to seal ..... so that's next task to sort out..... thought things were going too well!
I think I'll weld up tank tomorrow and throw some more paint at it ... before setting about the oil leaks
Getting on the road is just the start of your troubles... ...
The TRW is potentially a nice bike but I'm still fixing problems caused by previous owners...Bodges, lack of maintenance and general neglect...
I have to say rebuilding a bike thoroughly from the floor up always beats buying a 'runner' in my book...'Set the clock to zero'..Do everything properly and enjoy a reliable bike...
I'm still waiting for the next problem to appear each time I ride the TRW.
One day when I have the time it'll get the full treatment...Ian
I must admit i find engine/gearbox work far more interesting than the rest of the bike/car/boat - i think i spent too much time welding rust in my youth !
You have read my previous rambles and the one saving grace of the whole sorry saga was that the engine 'was a good one' !!!
What's happened in the intervening few months, god knows - maybe i was happy to find something that worked and over looked the faults!
I have virtually a complete spare engine, originally ear-marked for Bonneville (now off as i missed getting the bike transported over for free as part of a sponsorship deal - the B50 & CG125 is still going.
If the bikes breathing as heavy as i suspect and new gaskets don't solve the problem then i may as well start on the 'new' engine.
I should look on the bright side - at least i have something complete to get her registered.
New target is the Beamish Run - 19 June as i will be racing 12 june when i would have done the Bamburgh run.
