Pre war BSA wheel - rear

Hi folks

Am trying to help a colleague at work who is building a pre war ohv BSA

I provided a rear sprocket which I thought would fit - but on offering up the sprocket to his hub, it's clear the 3 pins / stubs are smaller than the 3 holes in the hub so it rocks back & forth

The sprocket fits 2 other wd m20 hubs I have - a nice snug fit

A wheel I bought recently is from a pre war civvy BSA - it had a brighter green paint on the hub & remains on the rim, the sprocket rocks on this also ??

Question is - was there a sprocket with bigger locating pins / stubs available for the pre war range - it's seems the wd sprocket is not suitable - all three holes in the hub are round & not oval - they appear to be machined as standard

Any ideas ?

Re: Pre war BSA wheel - rear

Well there were bigger bikes pre-War, a 600 Sloper and 500 and 750 V Twins which would probably need bigger components?

Re: Pre war BSA wheel - rear

The 750 V twin and the M20 shared the same detachable rear hub but had different chainwheels.

Re: Pre war BSA wheel - rear

John,

Could you give me the size of the holes please. I will check my V twin because I have to different hubs with different sizes locating pins although this shouldn't be the case according to the parts books.

Re: Pre war BSA wheel - rear

I recently acquired a 3 bolt sprocket qd rear wheel sold to me as a M20 but has a rear sprocket with small ribs on outer similar style to goldstar finned rear sprockets never seen these before could this be for a v twin ? Dave

Re: Pre war BSA wheel - rear

In 1939 that finned drum was M24 Gold Star but in 1940 M20 had these also.

Re: Pre war BSA wheel - rear

Hi Leon

Wd M20 hub i have here has 6 holes on the brake/rear sprocket side

All measure aporox 13.2 mm ~ 13.3 mm

The civilian pre war wheel is different
3 holes at approx 14.3 mm
3 holes at aporox 15.8 mm

Holes do not appear oval

Before blasting paint remaining was a bright pre war bsa green
