Hello all,
If anyone knows or has a G3L to check could they tell me the size of stud that passes through the seat down tube and the engine plates above the gear box. Mine has a 3/8" hole in the seat tube lug and 5/16" holes in the plates.
Thanks for any help.
Richard
Maybe you are looking at the wrong holes in your engine plates? The stud is 3/8" and also holds the rear of the mag platform. The smaller hole behind it doesn't seem to have a function? But knowing Matchless, it's probably one of a series of ten different engine plates. Ron
You beat me to it Ron, but wartime there were only 2 versions I'm aware of (will check Simons website later) so the early thick ones on the G3WO and the thinner ones on the G3L.
It's not Matchlesses fault that the army required lighter bikes, but they responded very well to it!
Thank you Ron,
Your picture explains all! Despite taking loads of pictures before I dismantled the thing I didn't have one of that stud. In my innocence I thought the seat tube lug was secured though the 5/16" holes aft of the mag platform stud, my excuse is that I'm familiar with post war AMC stuff with vertical seat tubes but not earlier machines.
Thanks again
Richard
You're welcome Richard. I've been there, with lots of pictures except the very one you want is just out of sight
We joke about that dynamo idea. But it's no joke really! I would make sure that the dynamo is professionally restored and that new chains are fitted and lined up and adjusted correctly. I loaned a G3L to a friend some years ago as his own Triumph was in pieces. The bike had recently come to me and I hadn't yet touched it. He managed to do the event in Guernsey with it, but continued to ride it afterwards. Of course the chains clattered together and jambed up in the primary case. So he had to remove the case by the road side and throw the dynamo chain away. I received the bike back with a bent armature It's not my favourite design idea. Ron
I know what you mean about damaged dynamo spindles, I've not had a good one on any of the bikes I've owned, maybe that's because I could never afford a good bike! Is there a recognised repair to reclaim a damaged spindle?
Richard
Not if its bent there isn't. All you can do is source a secondhand one. As its now scrap you could try wacking it with a hammer between a couple of bricks, you never know it might work!
