I've seen it mentioned on a Facebook page that Roy Bacon died today.
He hadn't been providing his machine dating service for some time but has left a huge legacy of marque histories and other motorcycling books.
Back in the early 1980s, there was little else and although his wide remit sometimes meant that he couldn't be a detailed as some of us would have wished, his books set a high standard and an introduction to the idea that these things could be researched.
That's a shame. Roy was very knowledgeable, but most cleverly, he found himself a niche in the market. He produced books which have been a staple for a hell of a lot of enthusiasts over the years. Frequently, you'll find a copy of one of his books with the miscellaneous documentation, accompanying a classic bike purchase.
My A10 paperwork includes a letter fro Roy, with relevant information, but also
some speculation, which added to the mystery.
Sadly missed I'm sure. But, could you ever imagine him doing a book on classic Harleys, Kawasakis, Hondas etc? No, I can't.
I met him a couple of times..He used to attend the Bristol Classic Bike Show periodically when it was in the old docks...
He always seemed happy enough to chat about his work and his 'up and coming' projects...
I think his books have stood the test of time well as reference books and are still very useable today, being very detailed and on the whole pretty accurate as well...and you have to admire his total output..
I consider completing one book to be a very worthy achievement...Ian
