BSA M20 Toolbox Bracket (missing)

Folks
I removed the bolt from the top of the toolbox and the nut on the right hand side, removed the toolbox.
On looking at the back of the toolbox I noticed the ghost image of where a bracket had been, this was clearly located and secured though with 2 bolts holes going through the toolbox reinforced,
I have found the spec for the toolbox bracket in the technical section and have started to make it.
However I am unsure of the position of the bracket with regard to the of set.
Is it designed to prevent the toolbox being pushed in or pulled outwards any photos of this would be really helpful

Regards Jim

Re: BSA M20 Toolbox Bracket (missing)

Hi Jim..The toolbox bracket goes down the back of the box, curves over the frame rail (towards the wheel), then down behind the frame rail and is bolted to the back of the silencer mounting bracket using the same bolt that holds the silencer...Ian

Re: BSA M20 Toolbox Bracket (missing)

Hi Ian
Thank you I decided to make a template out of aluminium, temporarily bolt it on and look at the options as to its position
I used the dimensions from the Tech page, however did not put the bend/offset on yet, so will do that now, may however have to tweak my dimensions a little to come on to that bracket perhaps 3/8"
I expect the chap who replaced the exhaust may have removed it for what ever reason
As a bonus I have found 3 different colours of green paint around the area of the bracket
The M20 is Contract 7287 delivered Nov 1940 still most of its original tinware

Hi Jim,
Does it still have the contract plate? and if so what's it location? My M20 is from the same contract, but is a September bike.

Re: BSA M20 Toolbox Bracket (missing)

Hi Dave
Yes it still has its contract plate located on the lower rear mudguard about 4" below the join and just below the tail light,
Information on this is C7287 and the catalog number 24
There is also a brass plate held with copper rivets on the top of the toolbox this has the post war registration number also stamped is 5-51 class 1
There is another brass plate on the tool box lid but this I suspect was put there by the last owner it shows no age and is held with little brass bolts.
The M20 was dispatched to the War Office London on the 12th November 1940
This M20 was released by the MOD July 1970
If you look at the visitors bikes I think it is about the 3rd from last I have removed the C number and the Free French flag I now have the correct C number and will mark it up to the Highland division

Re: BSA M20 Toolbox Bracket (missing)

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your reply, at present I haven't got a plate, hope to get one sometime. So now I have an idea of its location.
I had a look at your bike, the other plate on the toolbox lid, looks like a Ministry of Supply plate and should have the bikes post war reg, chassis /frame number and any work done on it. This plates have been around for ages, they are blank so you can put your on info on it.
Thanks again, nice bike
