WD/RE Flying Flea restoration and detail.......

Some close-up images of my first contract WD/RE that may assist those restoring similar.......

photo 015_zpsoabjk8pt.jpg......Miller blackout mask.......very similar to Lucas externally but note the side brackets and the 4 pilot-lense aperture screws as opposed to the Lucas type which features 3..........size is also very slightly larger and secured by a sprung pull-type clip Lucas style........
photo 014_zpsyz1ytt3q.jpg......Mansfield-brand saddle, as also fitted to the James ML...........note the shape and spring arrangement........
photo 013_zpswo9txqlp.jpg...more on the Flea saddle...note that this uses the inner rear-spring mounting positions whereas the James ML uses the outer positions...........
photo 012_zpsangd007t.jpg.......the contract plate (steel) position of the first contract for Flea's (on the left-rear upper frame rail)......latter contracts had this affixed to the rear mud-guard below the tail-lamp.........
photo 011_zps1tyavrt7.jpg......Miller WD tail-lamp.......aside from the lense (much larger) it was similar to the Lucas type although screw-affixed..........the base unit in particular near-identical to the Lucas although of slightly different measurements...........also fitted to some G3L's and Velocette's..........
photo 002_zpsei7h9y37.jpg......rear brake pedal spring position.......fits (rather clumsily) onto the pedal on the right-side of the machine and the other end fits onto an extention of the silencer-to-pipe stud.......
photo 010_zps5ozbrlbv.jpg.......Engine numbers.......all Flea engines have their own number, with the "V" prefix indicating the fitting of the non-standard Villiers carb (similar to the James ML but not identical as the needle and jet block differ).......however, note the frame number applied to the crankcases, in this case "5550" which suggests my bike has had a replacement WD engine fitted at some point (Frame and engine numbers originally matched, mine being "8083")........
photo 009_zps8nlgtiyi.jpg......often neglected, the correct WD Flea fuel tank mixing instructions.........available from "Classic Transfers"......
The correct twist-grip/handlebar end-plug used to vary the throttle friction by a screw-in insert.........changed from a flanged to non-flange type at Frame number 7170......
photo 008_zpsy3ggbjfb.jpg.....Flea twistgrip........note that the WD canvas grips are unique to the Flea, the ends being far wider and the entire assembly supplied mounted on thin steel tubes...........used for both throttle (when the clamp-on flange was fitted) and the dummy grip (which was screw-affixed).....
photo 006_zpstjijrpww.jpg.....Frame number location....right-side of head-stock and no prefix nor suffix........
photo 005_zpsjp2gmcox.jpg......cylinder head (NOS), decompressor and spark-plug detail..........
 photo 004_zpsetxho1ay.jpg....General view over engine......
photo 003_zpsfxdflkli.jpg......fuel tank serial numbers in the correct size and font........these are thin vynil transfers from Classic Transfers at £10 pair........when fitted these snug-down nicely and after application of fuel-proof matt varnish look really good............. The originals fitted to WD Flea's were waterslide transfer numbers........

Hope all the above is of interest and use

Re: WD/RE Flying Flea restoration and detail.......

I might add that a litre of fuel added with a dash of 2-stroke oil and this old girl started 2nd kick and ran beautifully today...........first time since last used in the early 1970s and the first time in original WD trim since WW2.........

Yet another WD bike is re-born........
