Hi folks,
My original Altette horn was beyond repair, but, I found that stripping it down to discover it was useless was fairly straightforward.
I got a replacement original/genuine Altette horn but when it arrived, it didn't work :-( So, I set to & tried to strip it down, remembering how easy the first one was...
This one was not so easy! The screws had been in there since 1930 or close to & were siezed solid, so, a few gentle taps with "the right tool" and some WD40 got them moving & out they came.
Then the front body piece wouldn't budge, so again, with the aid of "a useful tool" I got the front part of the case off.
I then tried to remove the large centre nut, but that isn't for moving - not at all!! :-/ Still, that's not really an issue right now because, recalling the earlier horn, that part didn't actually do much & so I move to get the inner working parts to be at least on view, so I could check for loose/broken wires and give it a clean out... But that's as far as it will go, for I cannot releasr the cast body from the thin metal diaphram... It seems that it is bolted internally to something, and simply will not budge! Nothing like the earlier horn I stripped down, which came apart quite easily...
As I've always maintained, even when restored correctly these units emit a pathetic note akin to a constipated chicken in its death throes in a sound-proof concrete box...........and that after being around £150 - £200K lighter after purchase and professional restoration........
Buy a cheapo Jap 6V horn....can be obtained for around a fiver and twice as loud as the original...bolt it to the top frame rail underneath and between the fuel tank bridge.............fit the none-working British horn in the correct position with dummy wires...................Bob's your Uncle, possibly your Aunt also.....
Ray, your information has been quite helpful inded :-)
I did "bodge" my original horn and managed to fit a more modern Jap horn inside of the cast body - not 100% perfect, but it'll pass muster and do till such times as I can finally steal... er... get my hands on a suitable "working" replacement.
As for the strangled chicken in the concrete bunker... ROFLMAO yes, indeed, you are 100% correct lol ;-)
