Hi folks - First of all, I apologise as this subject has probably been covered already, BUT, I can't find reference to it...
My rear stand seems to be overstretching when the bike is put onto it. I don't want to break the stand (or the bike) so can anyone direct me towards a fix for this please?
The worn parts can be built up with weld and re-shaped or the pivot pin made slightly larger.
I have also seen new pivot holes machined and welded into place in a really worn-out case.
Many ways to skin the cat depending on the severity of wear and where the wear is - if you are able to post some close-ups of the pivot areas I'm sure there will be many suggestions from the collective.
To me it does look as if your stand is going too far 'over centre'. Quite why, and which part is worn is difficult to tell from the picture. There are, as has been mentioned, a number of different places where the wear can take place. My guess, based on my own experience and that of others who I have spoken to is that it is more likely to be the frame 'stops' that have worn coupled with enlarging of the frame holes. Trouble is, once you have your situation, then how the weight of the bike, in conjunction with the load when you kick start it on the stand will just increase the speed at which further damage will occur. I ended up with the frame hole breaking and I had to cut a piece of plate to graft on to the frame. Somewhere I have a drawing of this, I will see if I can find it. I would recommend sorting the problem now before it gets worse. i.e. breaks while out somewhere. I don't know the angle for a correct 'stance' but it does not want to be much over vertical.
As BTB says the rear stand should be just over vertical.
And is's always better not to start the bike on the stand. It would easely overload.
That also goes for centre stands and side stands, if you want them to live longer.
As soon as this crappy Scottish weather clears and I can get a proper look at the bike and her stand, I will be able to report back, meanwhile, I'm trying to stay warm and dry :-( June? Really? :-/
