removing brass bezel on smiths speedo

Hi all, before I set to with the chisels any top tips on removing the brass bezel? The two wee screws holding the dial have come loose and I want to get in there to screw it back on :(

Put it upside down into some (shallow) boiling water to expand the bezel...Ian

Re: removing brass bezel on smiths speedo

WD brass bezels are secured by a "Smiths" embossed rivet...........this needs to be drilled-out.......

As for unscrewing the brass bezel, some are easy but others not, especially when gummed-up with paint, etc..............

Safest method is the old leather strap wrench with big leverage.............otherwise you risk damaging and/or destroying the soft-brass bezel and the equally thin steel speedo case...........

Put some resin in the hole to prevent slipping and over-tightening...

Re: removing brass bezel on smiths speedo

Thanks chaps, didn't realise it was threaded! I'll put those chisels away then :)

Re: removing brass bezel on smiths speedo

here another tool:

Re. my earlier post on speedo's, the nuts holding the speedo are certainly not 1/4"BSF/BSC, and also not 0BA (as I stated before), but common M6! the little big headed screws holding the internals are M5.

But now the catch, if you want something original looking, the M6 nuts have an outside diameter of 10.5mm (AF) (and not 9,5mm as on normal M6 nuts), and are also higher, just had a small batch made;

The thread on the bezel is also metric btw. and the reason for all this is that when Smiths took over the French company/patents of Jaeger, everything was ofcourse metric!

Hope this helps,

Lex

Re: removing brass bezel on smiths speedo

I found out the correct spanner for this nut is marked 0BA, so they never changed the threads, but did adapt the hex. strange.....

Cheers,

Re: removing brass bezel on smiths speedo

Ian,
my neighbour used a big ring-clamp, tied it down firmly and turned the bezel loose - very carefully.
Worked well.

Re: removing brass bezel on smiths speedo

Wow, some great tips. In the end I made a wooden clamp like the one Ken described out of a length of oak flooring. Worked a treat :)

Re: removing brass bezel on smiths speedo

I use a "Baby Boa Strap Wrench". Google it, they're very useful.

DUNCAN - Snap, I use my oil-filter strap-wrench, I think made by DRAPER.
