One for the Ariel specialists

In an old Classic Bike issue (June 1981), I found an interesting reader's letter. Mr J J Lee, the VMCC Ariel Marque Specialist, told us that
"...
During World War Two 350 and 500cc singles were produced experimentally, having a high-camshaft arrangement with, I believe, a planetary timing gear set-up. These machines were destroyed by the works when the Ariel company was sold to BSA in 1944 (not 1947 as is more widely believed). Someone, somewhere, might have unofficial photos and information on these machines, for which I would be eternally grateful.
...
"

I couldn't find anything about these experimental Ariels in O&M... Has anybody ever seen anything about these bikes I wonder?

Cheers,
Jan
