I need to order a new primary drive chain. As I am not sure that it is the correct chain that is on it now, do I count the number of teeth on the primary drive sprocket? I think that the chain should have 69 links, but not sure. Also how long should the chain be? Regards Pat

According to the Hints and Tips in the Technical Section of this website the size is 1/2" X .305" X 69 links if every thing is standard. 18T engine sprocket.
Thanks Keith.
I'm doing the same thing and was just wondering: is that equivalent to 428 chain?

Hi Cas Don't know what 428 chain is, but buy 1/2" x 5/16" x 69. the 0.305" is the inner width between plates, so 0.3125" between plates is OK. Made myself sound very knowledgeable there...........I confess Ian Wright put me straight. Kind regards Pat ps I posted something else on Chain Dimension Terminolgy....coz wasn't sure.
Hi Cas I think the Renold part number is 110 046 69. Can't say for sure if you will get a Made in England Renold chain though. Regards Pat
You can still get Reynolds chain...but it's very expensive.. I use Regina chain which is readily available and is dimensionally very similar to the Reynolds spec...and I've found it to be durable... Many Japanese chains have thicker side plates and longer link pins to accommodate this, so are slightly wider overall.... '428' is the equivalent for the primary chain...'520' the equivalent for the 5/8" x 1/4" M20 rear chain... Worth knowing as some suppliers aren't familiar with the Imperial designations...Ian
