I was having a look at Karl Martins book "Irish Army Vehicles, Transport and Armour since 1922" and he says that in 1948/49 the Army had borrowed 2xFord GPW jeeps from the British for testing but the British Ministry of Supply advised them not to buy ex-WW2 jeeps as most were now in poor condition and represented poor value for money. The advice was taken on board and 29 x Willys CJ3A were purchased 1950/53 and 10 CJ3B 1953/1955.
Ten of the jeeps were sent to the Congo with the Irish army on their first UN peace keeping mission 1960/64 and were left there. Unfortunately 26 Irish soldiers lost their lives in the Congo on UN service.
One CJ3B is preserved at the Curragh, Co. Kildare military museum.
