Does anybody have any reference to the Vokes filter canvas pad ("bollock protector") in any of the various parts lists ? The air cleaner, originally a Norton item and identified as such thereafter by "NC" part numbers, seems to have every component right down to the last screw listed but the pad appears to be absent............clearly, this was part of the filter assembly...........I'm looking for a part number here.....probably made by the same contractors making pannier bags, Y-straps, etc............excellent copies of these in green, brown or tan canvas can be had from Frank Brown...........
I haven't looked (yet) in the M20 parts lists of the two contracts that had the Vokes fitted, but it might be under 'Sundries' as opposed to the filter assembly itself...Ian
Thanks Ian. I've looked myself in late-war W/NG and Norton parts lists......no pad listed but pannier bags and Y-straps are...........
Do we know what era these pads actually are ? Early (eg- 1941-42 when the Vokes introduced) or a late-war item ? I've got a couple of photos of late W/NG's in the Far East taken in 1945 with these pads fitted but have also seen a Norton from contract C.7353 from 1940-41 fitted with one......
Working on the theory that the pad was a reaction to.. err... problems, and not a bit of clever advanced thinking, then an introduction some time after the arrival of the filter would be the answer to that...
The M20 parts list for contract S7218 lists...'Pad, air cleaner protector qty. 1 MT12/NC12927'.....
So it has nothing to do with B******s but rather dents in the back of the air cleaner.. ..
That contract was the last contract, made between 8/45 and 1/46..so not actually wartime...
However, the preceding contract also had the filter..Unfortunately I don't seem to have the parts list for that one...
However, going by the picture you have seen of one in use in 45 it is likely that contract had them as well I would have thought.......Ian
Many, many thanks Ian....fills a gap in my research ....and typically, no thought for the troops, only the air cleaner !!!! Personally, I wouldn't want my vital areas causing dents in said cleaner.........
