Tick over proble

Hi all
Having just rebuild my m20 I am having a tick over problem
With the motor warm and full advance the motor is hunting , the taper needle is on the second notch from the top and when trying the air pilot screw it makes no difference to the running, I have dropped the taper needle to the top notch and the hunting seems to have stopped but I still have a high tick over I have adjusted the pilot air and the tick over screw but not able to get to a low tick over . Could this be a worn taper needel or something else
Regards
Carl

Re: Tick over proble

The needle shouldn't be having an effect at tickover. If adjusting the pilot air screw is ineffective, the inference has to be that the pilot airways in the jet block are blocked.

This means dropping the body in a pot of boiling water, tapping the block out carefully with a wooden dowel and then making sure that all drillings in the block and mixing chamber can be blown through..if not, carefully clean.

Re: Tick over proble

Hi Ric
Don't think this is the problem as I have striped and cleaned the carb. Could it be anything else before I remove the carb and strip down again

Re: Tick over proble

If it's not the fuel air mix then timing ? If it ticks over when retarded, could it be set over-advanced ? Assuming that there is compression then only fuel and spark can really be a factor...

Have you checked fuel level ?

Re: Tick over proble

Hi Rik

No will not tick over when retard,
Timo
Timing is fine 7/16 bf top dead at full advance ,
Looks like I will need to strip the carb and see if sometihing has got in there

Re: Tick over proble

I thought hunting was a symptom of an air leak?

Re: Tick over proble

I agree..An air leak at the carb flange, head gasket, exhaust valve seat or timing hole bolt could also be a factor....

How are things affected when you run with normal settings but with the choke closed?...

Don't forget the pilot screw meters air, not petrol and an air leak elsewhere can override its fairly small adjustment range....Ian

Re: Tick over proble

Hi Ian
Will look at carb flange
No leek on the head gasket , valve seats all ok, no timing hole this has been sealed some time ago
Could there be another leak in the carb to look for
The bike runs fine on the road and starts first kick most times just not good on tick over

Re: Tick over proble

If the carb body and or slide are worn, you will never achieve a nice slow tick over. Again drawing in excess air when it's not needed. Ron

Re: Tick over proble

Might be worth looking at a new carb .?

Re: Tick over proble

Take the jetblock out again and clean the tiny jet hole out with a tiny strand of wire.
