matchless frame number wartime?

Hi im at a jumble right now and can buy a G3l with framenumer 86885
Can anybody confirm this is wartime?
License says it 41 but this cant be right.
Help is much apreciated because I m tempted to buy it
now.
Thanks Menno

Re: matchless frame number wartime?

My O and M gives the last wartime G3L frame num as 79088 but nothing is certain in this world.

Re: matchless frame number wartime?

Ordnance records also show that S6150 was curtailed at 79088. Matchless engine numbers were higher and ran until (presumably) 96088...Could it be that someone has ignorantly stamped a frame to match an engine ?

Re: matchless frame number wartime?

Hi all, already replied to this on another list, and without any pictures of the bike and frame number the discussion is quite useless......

The frame could be restamped in another place to match the paperwork, was done a lot in the past!!

Original framenumber is on r/h side, under the saddle, in front of the big bolt where the rear frame joins the front frame.

And matchless started numbering all over in 1946 civvy production, so very confusing sometimes.

Cheers,

Lex

Thanks Keith, that was exactly what I wanted to hear! My Matchless is in the 62000
and is dated 1943, so it could never been 1941.

The engine was '41 so I think it was dated in the past with the engine number.
The frame number was in the right place, and without a sidecar lug.

The bike was sold at the end of the jumble, but not to me
The price was right though.

Thanks again for the replies.
