My newly restored James ML will start easily and run for 10/20 seconds and then stops. The engine remains free and does not seem to nip up and will start again almost immediately but then stops again. Any help or suggestions as to what might be the problem would be most welcome. Cheers JT

Sounds like a fuel or air problem to me John......your ignition seems fine, especially as it re-starts..........best way to check this is by substitution of the carb, and oddly enough I have quite a few ..........
I had exactly the same issue with mine on first start up, the problem with mine was the Main Jet, it all appeared to be fine but the main hole was blocked with a perfectly clear lining of solidified fuel, pushed it out with a pin and it has never been better.
The problem with the old 4 stroke fuels is that they do solidify and if the bike hasn't been run for a while, will completely solidify.
Check the jets and make sure you set your screws properly for first running.
I couldn't agree with you more Julian..........fuel issue !
I know these engines well, so maybe a strip-down of the carb and a thorough clean-out would be the first port of call.........old two stroke oil in old fuel can cause additional issues.........
If you need any carb spares or a substitute carb JT I can help.........
