M20 Frame Restoration

Hello,
I have stripped my M20 to the frame and I want to rebuild it from scratch. I have the frame now. What are the important things to take care of, with respect to the frame? For example I have checked the grease nipples, The threads for the stand etc. Plese hlep.

Re: M20 Frame Restoration

John, a good opportunity to check the frame is not bent. You can do this by clamping a straight edge on the front down tube and saddle tube extended right through to the rear wheel spindle forks. Calculate half the diameter of the tubes to give you the centre line. Repeat the operation on both sides as a double check. The rear portion of these frames can get bent and it's possible to straighten them by wedging the frame some how and using a big bar between saddle tube and rear wheel forks.

Also check the rear stand pivot holes for wear.....causing the stand to go too far over centre in the down position. On the subject of rear stand. Make sure you put the rear wheel snail cam on the correct way round or it will fowl the stand......Ask me how I know . Ron

Re: M20 Frame Restoration

They would be better if they were brazed using a manganese rod, when you re drill them it acts as a bushing

Re: M20 Frame Restoration

If you are doing a frame up restoration, make sure you have the inside of your frame tubes as clean as possible before beginning painting. No doubt obvious to others, but it seems that grit and swarf still residing inside the tubes seems to appear at the most inopportune times when moving the frame around during the painting process....
