Newbie with question about first gear selection problems on a 1941 BSA M20
Selecting first gear is really difficult from stationary and seems to get harder throughout a ride. Trying to get into first from a standstill seems to result in lots of grinding.....
All other gears up and down seem to select with no issues. Even changing down to first to come to a halt is fine.
Any ideas of what the issue could be or am I doing something wrong.
Sounds to me that your clutch is dragging? If you have a full set of plates installed, especially if you have new friction plates, can result in not much separation between the plates in the basket. It has been discussed here before and is quite common practice to remove one friction and one steel plate from the assembly. Resulting in a much lighter clutch with more room for the plates to separate.
Or it could be as simple as the wrong handlebar lever with not enough distance between the pivot and cable, which will not give you the lift and separate you require..... oooow Matron! Ron
