seal exhaust to head

Just about to refit exhaust to head after a rebuild but as the exhaust only pushes into the head what do you use to seal around the joint with ??

Re: seal exhaust to head

Carl the exhaust pipe port in the head is tapered to make a gas tight interference fit.
If the port is worn through a previous rattling pipe, the pipe can be swaged up at an exhaust centre with a cone. I fit mine with a finger full of Halford's exhaust assembly paste smeared around the fist 1/2"as belt and braces. Ron

Re: seal exhaust to head

I use clear silicone sealer, the same as you would use on your gaskets, surprisingly it will withstand the temperature and it remains flexible.

Re: seal exhaust to head

Like Dave I used the silicone sealant. I had some left over from fitting the flue to my woodburner which is tolerant to high temperatures. It seems to do the job.Not sure how easy it will be to dismantle though when the time comes.

Re: seal exhaust to head

On a sidevalve, the exhaust does not go into the head. (Is this considered linguistic rivet-counting?)

Re: seal exhaust to head

Of course John. I just followed suit with the original terminology. Just to put things straight. On an M20 it is in the barrel.
