I think that is the first wartime photo of an M20 I've seen with the allied star on the tank-are there more photos that others have seen?

Re: website photo

Yes I have seen a few more, didn't that had to do with D-Day?

Re: website photo

I've seen no instructions stating that the recognition stars should be applied to motorcycles. They are sometimes seen on captured motorcycles.

This bike seems to be with Polish Armoured. They may have interpreted instructions in another way or simply been more impressed by the American way of doing things than the British were.

Re: website photo

There's a photo with a James ML aboard a landing craft just prior to D-Day with the "star" on top of the tank...........no outer circle either......

Re: website photo

Another photo of a G3 with the white star on top of the fuel tank.

Re: website photo

I suspect that this is a liberated Terrot (with the dynamo drive cut off)that probably saw Wehrmacht service before the RCAF got hold of it.

That looks like a German helmet hanging on the Spitfire's cannon. That might be dangerous to wear with itchy trigger fingers about

Re: website photo

Don't know if the British had this habit, but many Canadians ordered to paint white stars on their vehicles would paint them on crooked out of protest so as to not be mistaken for Americans. I originally thought that was the case with the Polish bike, but it's not crooked enough :-)

One of the cute ladies fueling up the bikes has a white star on her helmet.

Re: website photo

The uniform looks to be german Luftwaffe as well, perhaps a POW working on a Brit aircraft or a German working on a captured plane?

On second thoughts, the bit I thought was the yellow board with styalized birds on (Luftwaffe) seems to be flare from the Erks collar......

Re: website photo

My wifes late Uncle Raymond once told me that in the run up to D-Day and for weeks afterwards, he spent almost all his time painting stars on all the British vehicles, big stuff and small, purely so that Allied aircraft could spot friend from foe.
