Box-Bodied Big 4 Forum Picture

The picture appears to be IWM H 12814 - I believe that they have it captioned as 106 Provost Company of South Eastern Command but others in the series seem to show the IV Corps elephant sign. They were about to commence a Traffic Control exercise in the East Grinstead area.

The outfit in the foreground, C4385130 is one of the 600 built under contract C7576 with AA type box body. If I'm reading the contract details correctly, it is likely to be frame number S2500.

Re: Box-Bodied Big 4 Forum Picture

I think the 633cc engine gives it 4HP. I'm not sure if any were supplied as solo's. The post war Big 4 was 600cc. Ron

Re: Box-Bodied Big 4 Forum Picture

Its funny how whenever you look at a picture your eye is drawn to small details, and then then the questions begin (or is it just me and a few other rivet counters?).

The rear passenger grab handle has a bit of rubber tube over the top curved section, we all know that, but this picture appears to show the lower part painted a darker colour in comparison to the motorcycle frame, could it be black?

I can't say that I have noticed they are any different Marcel? Will have to look more! Normally it's a 'D' shaped hole with a funnel shape at the top. Ron

And here is the other side of the box combo.

The first Big 4's came out in 1910, and they had a 4" stroke, so that's another theory.

Has always been a machine for sidecar use though.

Discussed the D shaped hole with Marcel last night, but don't believe there were 2 models.

Rob, the dark looking grabhandle looks like a shadow to me, have to order that picture from IWM, as I don't have a high res. scan.

So will be in the UK next week, if anyone needs some bringing/fetching??
Looking forward to see the restored C10 in the flesh!

Cheers,

Lex

Nice shot of the yard where Norton carried out final assembly in their state of the art production facility... ....Ian

Re: Box-Bodied Big 4 Forum Picture

Ian, it's far too well-ordered for Bracebridge Street - it's actually an Australian photo presumably showing the latter stages of uncrating.

Rob, did you notice the rubber pillion rests, gear lever rubber but no kick-start rubber ? ...and long gear indicator..plus the toolbox lock had disappeared by then...Early 1941 build, I believe.

There's been some great bikes built in a run down shed and some awful bikes built in a state of the art automated factory
