I have seen several listings on Ebay for these claiming to be part of original Motorcycle toolkits from your humble WM20 to Triumph bonnys. Now I have been around old bikes for more years than I care to remember but this is the first time I have seen this tool and the claim its suitable for adjusting a WM20 clutch spring is a joke!!
Some sellers claim this to be a original tool others have it listed as a newly made item, anyway they seem to be selling to unsuspecting owners even to the extent of being listed as part of a original toolkits for Triumphs....Dave
I have used those tools some years ago, I have a vague feeling they were either for Triumph or AMC, possibly Triumph as the square bit is supposedly for tappet adjustment, though it'd be a bugger to use on Triumphs.
Tools and tool kit prices are becoming a joke, once they've got the bike blinged up theres nothing else to spend cash on.
All these are definately repro whatever the advert says, original ones got well distorted
That tool was never part of a Triumph toolkit AFAIK might have been a after market period tool though.I think Ron all post war M20s apart from AA models were fitted with that 6 spring effort this tool will be no good for those either as they have lock nuts on the adjusters.Ken could be on track AMC tool?.As for all the new old stock tyre pumps which have suddenly become available with BSA or Triumph stamped on them these look like a repro item with a original package in the photo to give the impression they are genuine.. Dave
I asked one of the sellers (eBay) about the part number and what precisely this item was used for, the answer is below:-
"Hi and thanks for your interest. I''m not sure of the part number for the BSA but these were supplied by dealers for lots of makes as they were all the same. It fits the slotted top hat nuts that tighten down onto the 3 or 4 clutch pressure springs. These are on the clutch pressure cover. You cant use a screwdriver as the thread protrudes through the nut hence the slot in the middle.Cheers."

You could be right Dave, as I tend to lose interest after 1945. But I was under the impression that the six spring clutch you speak of was rubbish and BSA went over to the Triumph clutch. I could be totally wrong about that. I'm sure Ian will know. Again I know nothing about the original tool kits. I bought the tool for the Clutches on my 38 Speedtwin and my WD 3SW and 3HW. Ron
BSA lifted the Triumph clutch when they took over the Triumph company and it was fitted in various versions to all later swinging arm BSAs..(I think from late 56 onwards but I'd have to check that).
The fact they used it to replace their own 6 spring clutch says it all really I believe. Despite some peoples enthusiasm for the 6 spring version the Triumph type clutch is a better design..
The AA M20/21 models stuck with the single spring clutch...
Plunger M Series models retained the 6 spring clutch to the end of civilian (Non AA) production in 1958..
Military M20s retained the single spring clutch until they went out of service...Ian
My old M21 used to have the clutch adjusted by a screwdriver with a slot ground into the blade.... Plenty of opportunity to make some 'period' repros......

Made out of a scrap piece of stainless steel and has been working well this far.
