Another thing I found (Along with the gas mask bag)
Was an interesting sheet of canvas, with 2 grips/handles on both sides,
The back side is plain, and the front (I guess) is ribbed with straps of fabric,
One side of them is red, and the other is white, I can guess it was made like so
In order to be able to change the color of this sheet from white to red (?)
I did not buy it.
Anyone know what it is?
Some kind of signaling contraption?...
Cannot quite remember where I have seen these before, but yes you are correct regarding it being a signalling device. The side with the white strips on acts a bit like a shutter or venetian blind and can be used for sending Morse or other pre-arranged codes on a line of sight. They were certainly in use by WW1, I believe.
