As founder member of the ring piece club and honorary guard of the first ring piece I'm surprised Frank hasn't been in touch with me to find out where to send the royalties... ...Ian
It doesn't matter where it was acquired. Under feudal law, Ron St. Pierre is still able to claim Droit du seigneur from anyone that he catches using one...
I saw the picture of one originally on a Norton 16H...Unfortunately I didn't think to copy the picture as I didn't attach much importance to it......
The picture showed a piece of webbing roughly cut to a fairly irregular shape...
It wasn't an official part but seemed like a good idea to me, as I always had problems with leaking petrol on the paintwork...So, I tidied the idea up into a more regular shaped piece of webbing and fitted one...
I have to say they work very well and I wouldn't consider not fitting one now...especially with the more 'aggressive' fuels currently on sale...
It seems many others share the same view judging by the number seen on bikes now......
For the purist I suppose they are a non starter but I'm not really one of those...I prefer to look at it from a practical point of view and will embrace some deviations from standard on that basis...
I guess it will have to stay now as it's part of the history of the bike.. Something the patina enthusiasts do like to preserve I believe....
Shame I didn't copy the picture that gave me the idea...Ian
Got introduce to a nice old boy ex reme on arromanche beach on the 6th of June this year , and he said they used an old canvas rucksack cut out in a rough circle then glued to the tank to protect it
