Anybody catch that programme on Channel 4 last night? Absolutely brilliant! I won't say any more about it but if you didn't see it watch it on 4 on demand. Talk about rivet counting!
I enjoyed it, even if I was a bit wiped out after two days doing the Ardingly Jumble/show. I've recorded it so may watch it again.
It was very interesting to see the back story to the plane.
It was good watching but it did seem to me that the equivalent for is would be digging up an old bike that has been buried for 70 years , using only 2 spokes from the rear wheel and saying you had restored the bike? JT
I agree, there can't be much of the original Spitfire on the 'restored' one. The finished job is a lovely thing though, just a shame we didn't see more of the oily bits and spanner work. So called celebrities dancing or programmes about people baking cakes go on and on for years whereas something worthwhile and original like this gets a single rushed programme and that's your lot, don't get me started! I suppose we should be thankful that someone had the imagination to make the programme at all, well worth watching if you haven't seen it and Guy Martin is brilliant as always.
I thought Guy Martin had a nice compilment paid to him after his two seater flight when he was complimented on his mechanical feel and sympathy; I seem to remembr the RAF actively sought lads who were keen motorcyclists because of that and that they already understood the concept of "flying by the seat of your pants"
Unfortunately I haven't seen the television program... Was it about one of the Spitfires that was abandoned in Dunkirk in 1940? If so, here's some more information that I wrote in another forum some time ago (posts 543 - 544).
I'm glad you gave it a mention as I've been away quite a bit recently and would've missed it. It's on 4OD if anyone has yet to see it and what a shame they don't do more programmes of this type...
Just in case anyone has the Spitfire bug and is considering ownership, here's a handy guide from the Goodwood team.
PS. there's also a couple of other Spitfire related artcles at the bottom of the page including engine removal. Makes M20 engine removal look simple...
