Can anybody advise the best way to minimise the amout of oil that leaks from the primary chain case on an Enfield engine, I have bought a new rubber seal from Hitchcocks and was thinking of giving the seal a coat of Hylomar or simlar liquid sealant before assembly.
I fitted a new seal a few years ago but didnt apply any sealant and whenever the engine runs, oil runs from between joints.
Think you will find that the oil is running down the back of the rear primary case where the clutch shaft runs (mainshaft) then it drips off the bottom of the case. This may explain why it only drips when it has run. If you run it for a while then feel under the back of the case under the shaft and see if its wet.
Hope this helps.
Hi Tim,
Thanks for your quick reply to my question, I guess my next question is , is there supposed to be a seal behind the clutch assembly and fitted to the inner case or some form of deflector plate?
To be honest I have never had the bike apart ever since Ive had it.
I think I might have a manual at home but I'm at work at the moment so I thought I would post the question up just in case somebody might have the answer.
Chris,
Thanks for your reply, you could well have a point regarding the crankcase breather, to be honest my bike has been a bit neglected for the past couple of years as I had move home a couple of times and it has been sat on a trailer in a barn, I intended to use it for the XXX Corps event in September so I refurbished the petrol tank a couple of months ago and fitted it back on last week as part of a wake up service /reviver, I put some fuel in the tank, kicked the bike over a dozen of times to get the oil circulating then switched fuel on and she started on the second kick.
I have started stripping the primary drive out to look at the back of the inner case ( I just need to make an extractor to remove the clutch cush drive components off the gearbox shaft) so that I can take the inner case off of the engine and see if the oil is coming from the breather.
I noticed that there is a filter on the bottom of the R/H crankcase and was wondering if that was blocked and possible causing the engine to wet sump, I was going to check /replace the cartridge filter on the timing case as well.
