Hi, seems that Sean Hawker has disappeared from the classic bike scene (great shame IMO).
Anyway I've managed to fry the solid state regulator that he was making, does anyone do something similar for a dynamo which has been converted to 12V and still +ve earth?
Use Dynamo Regulators Ltd. www.dynamoregulators.com or ring Mike on 01489 880552 He runs a BSA and builds his parts himself. Use his regulators on all my bikes.
One further question to avoid frying the replacement unit (cheers Rick).
I'm quite happy with the Green, Yellow and Red wires, but the wire for the Ammeter, where does this plug into for a non ammeter bike? I know from experience it's not the -ve side of the battery.....
I use an MTHL solid state regulator on my M20 with a dynamo, (6V)
It is very robust and reliable, and always give me a 7.2V reading, as should.
I fitted it into an MRC2 box.
And used it on another M20 before I switched to an Alternator.
The unit is good for 6V or 12V, and you decide what it would be,
So you can use it as 6V now, and then 12V in the future, if you like.
I am not sure I understand the question regarding the ammeter..
Basically it should be regarded as a "Short", and it just there
To show the amount of Amperes passing through it.
On negative (-) ground systems it is situated somewhere along the main(+)
Line which goes to the battery,
And on positive earth system, it is in the middle of the (-),
But it really does not matter where it is,
As long as the potential into (And out) of the battery passes through it.
If it is fitted and you get the charge as discharge and discharging as charging,
Just swap between the wires on the ammeter.
