Norton bump stop rubbers

After many years of trying I finally found a pair of NOS bump stops for my Norton 16h. However they came without rubbers. Does anyone know where I can source a a pair of rubbers from? Many thanks!

Re: Norton bump stop rubbers

Hello Keith.
Sorry, can't help on the rubbers but where did you locate the stops and were there any others?
Regards,
Ben.

Re: Norton bump stop rubbers

Paul Norman sells rubbers which aren't quite the right type for Norton (I believe that they're the Velocette type) but they do work.

I have a feeling that Jeff Hunter makes them as well but he has no website (bound to be at Stafford this weekend though).

Thanks for the reply, will have a good ol root at Stafford!

Re: Norton bump stop rubbers

Yep, Jeff Hunter is the only supplier now.......

I have NOS ones on mine......

Not strictly necessary on a 16H, and later deleted under wartime economies, but a nice original fitting nonetheless.....

With forks in good condition and side check-springs fitted, like W/NG's, you need some serious off-road work to ever completely bottom-out the girders where the bump-stops come into play......

Mine touch on the road. Has it been a while since you rode Belgian pavé ?

Re: Norton bump stop rubbers

Bloody hell Rik ! And I thought our roads were bad, or have I just got a stiffer fork spring..??????!!

I just replied on the wants page before I read this thread. Ron

Re: Norton bump stop rubbers

I'm very happy with the fork action and the ride height is good. I have a feeling that on UK roads, you can try to avoid the potholes. Belgian roads are the pothole !

Biggest problem is either a change of surface such as to pavé, half way round a bend or the use of concrete slab construction which of course subside and heave. Feet off the footrests and up behind the ears is not unusual if you don't pay attention here....

Re: Norton bump stop rubbers

A huge reduction in the amount of maintenance carried out has ensured many of the lanes around Devon are beginning to resemble the off road sections in a pre 65 trial....

I used to ride around looking at the spectacular scenery...now I'm on the look out for the spectacular holes, many of which constitute a real danger....

All part of Britain turning into a Banana republic I suppose ....Ian

Re: Norton bump stop rubbers

My bump stops were a must in Normandy last year and they were hit hard on the Bayeux road, main spring was as much use as a soggy lettuce. I'll see what it's like with the new spring this year

Re: Norton bump stop rubbers

Where do they fit on the forks? A friend has a 16H in my garage incomplete at the moment but the forks are on it.

Re: Norton bump stop rubbers

They fit about an inch under the casting on the back of the forks. You have to slightly angel them out so they bump against the bottom yoke when the forks are heavily compressed. They were fitted on bikes up to and including contract C10217. My bike is actually the next contract C11082, so really wouldn't have had them, but I've seen photos of bikes from that contract with them, so that's good enough for me Plus my bike neede them at the time.

Re: Norton bump stop rubbers

Richard Miller has found a last set of the replica bump-stops that he had made and has put them on eBay. It looks as if they are going to fetch quite a high price.

What intrigued me was the comment : "if mounted incorrectly bottoming the fork out can result in bent tubes)"

I've never heard of this (nor seen damaged forks at that point)...Is this a known problem ?

Re: Norton bump stop rubbers

I still have a couple of sets of the bump stop castings that I had made in gun metal bronze. (Email me for a picture) And Jeff Hunter now makes the correct rubbers from Lex's originals. jeffalanhunter@aol.com

Re: Norton bump stop rubbers

I thought I recalled you having some made, Ron, but couldn't find the thread ! There obviously is a demand for them....it's just that this forum is largely made up of greedy blighters with a vast stock of everything !

Thats right Rik, this forum is mostly made up by vultures and rivet counters
