the insurance on one of my bikes is running out so I looked on line to sorn it there is a charge of £60 WOW! the bike is MOT and TAX free I read an article about continues sorn it is a bit vague whether it has started or doesn't start till December 16th this year I thought if the bike is in the shed or on private property you didn't need to sorn it
I have just looked on line and can insure it cheaper there was some suggestions that there was a cheap way to insure your bike to cover the sorn but was not for road use if any body knows of any cheaper was to do this I would be grateful thanks roger
If the bike is not taxed or insured FOR THE ROAD you need to make a SORN (statutory off road notification). Failure to do so is an automatic £80 fine. As far as I know its free to make a SORN but leave it late and the £80 fine applies. If the bike is in the shed or on private property you still need to SORN it, thats the whole point from when it first came out. You could also be liable for backtax.
Correct...The only alternative to SORN is to have it insured..One or the other...
Worth noting as well that SORN is not transferable...So, if you buy a vehicle that is currently sorned you still need to do it again as soon as you get it...
Road tax is going to be made non transferable as well, so when that happens you will either have to tax or SORN the vehicle automatically when you purchase it....
If you are the seller you will have the fun of reclaiming any unused tax from the DVLA...Deep Joy..
Best to plan the timing of your sale carefully I would think....Ian
Roger, you need to be really careful because ther are fake DVLA websites that will charge you. They are very convincing and I very nearly got caught by one. Make absolutely sure that you are on the governments DVLA site. Cheers, John
Roger, these are the thieving bastards who have tried to con you :-

Quite how they're allowed to operate counterfeit websites when Customs put so many resources into protecting people from £20 Rolex wristwatches that fool nobody is a bit of a puzzle.
phew !! thanks Rik and everybody done it now nearly got caught I thought it was a bit silly as usually most people sorn their cars/bikes because they are short of cash thanks roger

Hi Ian, To help the situation they are introducing a direct debit option at the time the changes take place & you can choose the debits to be monthly so it should still be possible to avoid overpayment (whole months like it is currently)
here's the page with the details ....
