Frame no identification

Hi all

Can anyone help identify the following frame no for me

I have got my OM British Forces Motorcyclyes book back now, it was on loan and this indicates it might be a frame no from 1940 period

WM20 2329

Can anyone help ?

Best regards

John

Re: Frame no identification

John, if the number is an original stamping then the frame (with matching engine) was despatched to the Ministry of Defence, Dublin on 5/3/1940.

Where did you find it ?

Re: Frame no identification

Hi Rik

It's the basis of my new project

But did not expect it to be that early, so am well pleased with that result

Frame is untouched so without a doubt original

By any chance, do you have a copy of that dispatch record ?

The frame has sat in the upper garage at my mams place since I can remember along with other BSA stuff

Now I just need to determine if it was a deluxe model, brake rod, brake plate speedo, rubber mount handlebars footrests etc

Thanks for that Rik

Re: Frame no identification

Hi Rik

Me again, would that make the machine an 1939 specification or during the war was that now fired out the window, instead becoming covered by contract ?

Re: Frame no identification

John, I'll mail you.

I'm not sure if the bike would have been a full-blooded deLuxe. The last reference that I can see to 'DL' was coincidentally an Irish bike but as far back as 30th October 1939...

So I'd doubt a panel tank but the evidence from British contracts is that they were being supplied with large tanks and valanced rear guards up until June 1940 or so. However, I don't think that you'd have had a brake plate speedo drive and I'd reckon on an MT110 rear lamp rather than an MT1130.

The rubber mounted bars do seem to have still been fitted well into 1940.

I'd suspect that Mick Walsh would have more on these deliveries and specs.

Re: Frame no identification

Thanks again Rik

The OM forces book doesnt go into that great detail on these changes so i will have to research a bit more

Best regards

Re: Frame no identification

Hi John & Rik, well done on digging out another one John. Your reg no should be ZD 188, and is in the Dublin Corpo books as 1939 but I think that they are wrong with their years, I've no other info on your bike I'm afraid. The front frame of WM20 2218 (ZD 182) was for sale at Leopardstown autojumble last year. WM20 2230 (ZD 149) is on the military archive and is a delux model, complete with legshields, and is from the same batch as yours, possibly.

Re: Frame no identification

Hi Mick

Thank you for that -

I have a photo of ZD 258 - it's a deluxe model but has no speedo drive on the brake plate luckily

It does have a bum pad on the rear guard - I had thought this was a small carrier on this type

Still got many odd early bits to get yet, like rubber mount handlebars - but happy I have an early project bike on the go

Thanks once again

Jo'b

Ps, when is next autojumble at leopards town ?

Re: Frame no identification

Hi John, Leopardstown autojumble is on 11 Oct. this year. I was at Carlow today but didn't see much m20 stuff.
