Hi all
Can anyone tell me the correct space between the rear brake plate and drum. I dont think I am missing anything and I have put mine back together the way it came apart, it spins nicely but does it look right ?
Thanks
It looks like the brake anchor plate is not actually covering the outer edge of the drum which it should. By the way I noticed that the spacer on the other side is th wrong way round. The flange should fit against the frame to put less strain on the lug.
Something is definitely wrong there...As Leon notes the lip of the brake plate should fit over the edge of brake drum...
I'd take the wheel out and check that everything is assembled correctly with the correct parts...You should be able to see what is holding the plate off the drum....
I find it is fairly common that everything is carefully reassembled as it was when stripped down but turns out not to have been correctly assembled in the first place.... ...Ian
Changes are that there are bearings fitted which are a little wider than the original ones, this brings the hollow spindle more out and consequently the brakeplate also.
If that is the case you can solve it by fitting a thinner washer between the schoulder of the hollow spindle and the bearing.
The bearings in two different widths and the matching spacers, also in two widths, appear to be standard parts...I have come across them in a number of hubs...I've yet to try and work out when the changes were made....
The spacers are fitted inside the hub shell behind the two wheel bearings outer races....
Another 'giveaway' that the wrong parts are fitted is on the opposite side of the hub. There the bearing adjuster nut, adjustment plate and locknut will not fit correctly if the wrong parts are used.
In that case the bearing sleeve barely has enough thread protruding to engage the locknut....Ian
Had another go tonight. The issue seems to arise when the wheel studs are tightened up they draw the drum towards the wheel. The edge of the drum is just level with the outer lip of the plate.

Maybe its a trick of the camera, but in your first photo Richard,it seems the edge of brake plate is closer to the base of the sprocket than it is to the top..ie it isnt sitting 'square'. Im wondering if perhaps the arm on the brake plate which connects to the torque arm is bent somewhat? Just a thought.
The spacer inside the brake drum must be fitted through the hole in the brake drum before it is screwed to the hub. Someone recently was trying to fit it after.....Which wont work!!
Question... with the spacer fitted in the drum, does the face of it sit flush with the face of the drum on the stud side or is it recessed. Mine sits in 3-4mm which is the distance the drum gets pulled back when tightened. Do you think a spacer behind the shoulder to bring it level would work.
