fuel levels

So here’s something I’ve wondered about for a while.
Fuel level.
Amal info sheets inform me that the correct level, say on a monobloc, is level with a pip on the float chamber cover while a concentric float should be a certain distance from the float bowl face etc. (haven’t found anything for a 276 and the like, yet). Now how does this relate to the actual level of fuel and the internal components of the carb. I assume that the relevant part is the main jet and the fuel level should be a certain distance above or below some datum point on the jet but does anyone know what this might be and or how the level affects the engine and how to determine the optimum level?

Cheers

Re: fuel levels

Pete, consensus seems to be that the fuel level should be in line with the top of the spray tube. When assembled, this is in line with the top of the brass blanking plug on the side of the mixing chamber body.

There was a thread a while back where I photographed mine with a clear tube alongside the carb to check it.

I actually used a grease nipple screwed into the drain plug opening on the float chamber arm. The plastic pipe pushed straight on to it.
