Sven not all the push rods are the same lenght if you buy them new it is importend that you adjust it with the litle ball end on your clutch control lever. If its to long if you make it shorter always harded the end. if it is to short some time if you have no other choice they cut it in two pices and have a steel ball in the midle. onley when you have no other choice. I make my own from a standard length of 1/4" dia. 'Silver Steel' which is 13" long...This is long enough to make any of the BSA clutch pushrods, irrespective of the clutch type fitted or the gearbox type.
From memory I think the one used with an WDM20 box and single spring clutch is 12 1/4" long.
However, if you have removed the last two clutch plates to make set up easier this will affect the length required...Also there are variations in the thickness of pattern clutch plates as well which can also be a factor..So the standard pushrod length might not be correct for your bike....
Cut the rod a little over length and then carefully trim down to length once you have tried it on the bike.
Only remove a small amount at a time as it's easy to 'overdo it'....
When you are happy it's the right length heat each end gradually up to red and quickly quench in some clean, cold water.
Next polish up the discoloured part with some emery and then carefully reheat until the end of the rod goes a pale yellow colour...As soon as that colour appears quench immediately in the cold water...If you overdo it and the steel goes dark brown, simply heat up to red again and repeat the process....Ian
