Only one siezed nut !

Hi all
Stripped the bike complete today! Only had 1 siezed nut which sheared off (mudguard stay at end of forks)!
Everything has been handpainted in thick bronze green, but am happy to report that numerous items are turning up with original brown SCC 2 underneath. Even the tin ware is showing it. So my plan to paint her up in the brown is a good one.
Engine and gearbox even painted so that will have to come off too...
Grease / oil / crud....lovely!! I think I will be a few days getting that off the bike and even longer getting the smell off me !
Wish me luck.

One small dilema.. the clutch and brake levers are chrome underneath with a green overpaint. Would like a set of brass ones but cant afford those. Any ideas on how to make what I have got look the best they can be ?

If the chrome is English good quality. You can get them blasted with a not to harsh medium for a dull plate look. Ron

Re: Only one siezed nut ! (Take 2)

I know there's a bit of a break in replies to the thread, but I'm new and only just saw it. I had a similar situation a while ago, when I had to "dull" some bright chrome wheel rims (blimey, just remembered, it was about 25 years ago, time flies!). I had a tin of paint flatting compound lying around, and remembered reading the instructions. They emphasised that it shouldn't be used on chrome.

"Aha" thought I. Turns out, it was just abrasive enough to actually remove the chrome! Didn't take long, and the chrome was dulled nicely. Since then, I've used it quite a lot. useful for dulling aluminium, but I've taken chrome off with it mostly

Most stainless steel saucepan cleaning solutions will also dull chrome ( they dull stainless as well ) but don't let HID catch you in the pot cupboard lest she decide you can do all the pots while you are there.

First roll out..

This is my first roll out of the garage today. Have to finish some of the electrics off, get her running smoother, do plenty of adjustments and toghten up most of the nuts.
Then for the markings.

Re: First roll out..

Richard, I have to say it looks superb ! As Rik will no doubt agree, we need far more motorcycles re-surfacing in the (often forgotten) British wartime SCC No.2 brown finish applied to so many vehicles and so much equipment between 1942 and 1944-ish............

The one good thing about post-war re-paints, although a bugger to remove, is the fact that it often preserves original finishes beneath.......my wife's ML has had a fair few parts overpainted but removal has revealed almost perfect cadmium/dull chrome beneath............

Re: First roll out..

Thanks Steve. Shes OK,not perfect and I doubt would stand up to any scrutiny. She still bears the scars of 15 years of army service and REME refits, countless years of neglect in a barn and 2 sloppy restorations. But my take on it is she should look as though she has had a service life and I would rather enjoy her than be worrying about her all the time.

Just found out today also that after spending hours servicing the spedo that the drive is spinning the wrong way, thats why it doesnt work !! AArrgghh

I just want to compare the running of mine now against some others as I have no benchmark against which to set it. Personally I think she sounds like a bag of nuts in a blender but I have had 1 aquaintance look at it who has a BSA sloper and he thinks its alright!

Re: First roll out..

Glad you have a sense of humour Richard. I keep forgetting to put smileys and such at the end!
