mystery wheel?

Any pre-war nut know what this heavy duty spoked 7 inch drum wheel could be? V-twin Enfield, early AJS or Matchy v-twin, early square four? It has provision for speedo drive but probably never optioned? photo 001_zps4ccba6a9.jpg Click on the picture for more pics.Douglas

Re: mystery wheel?

I can't identify it definitively...But the brake operating arm and a few other features look very Enfield to me....Hopefully there is an 'expert' out there somewhere who can tell all...Ian

Re: mystery wheel?

I was thinking something heavyweight. Must be some poor sod who's been looking for one for years! Hope we can help. Did you click the pic and see the other angles?

Re: mystery wheel?

Anyone know what a G14 bsa front wheel looks like. The web has various pictures but no detail.

Re: mystery wheel?

Douglas, I'm pretty sure it was identical to the early M20 with the speedo drive on the brake plate.

Re: mystery wheel?

There are lots of pictures of G14's on the net but mostly from the exhaust side. The brake drum is on the N/S. Ron

Re: mystery wheel?

Not G14.The G14 has the standard M20 hubs front & rear on 18" rims. The front brake drum on a G14 is a M20 rear drum with no teeth.Sam.

Re: mystery wheel?

here's a pic of an Enfield V twin looks like the same riveted brakearm. Could some clever puter nut blow it up and check? photo KGrHqRlQFF8WGKKmqBRhmRDYtWQ60_57_zps9fb83cf3.jpg

Re: mystery wheel?

I already looked at models K and KX. Most Enfields have a distinctive re-enforcing plate through the centre of the brake plate and a curved brake arm.

Here is the wheel from your picture which looks like the straight rivet brake arm. Enfields used that riveted idea on rear arms for sure. You can't see the re enforcing plate, but I think it's there.

You can clearly see the plate on this 1930 Model K, which is one of the few with a straight brake arm.

Re: mystery wheel?

Hi Douglas..Magnified, the brake operating arm in the pic of the RE V Twin you posted looks identical....The brakeplate also has the raised, radiussed edge...That could well be the one..That's a very late example of the Enfield twin isn't it?..Ian

Re: mystery wheel?

I see your point about the strengthening plate Ron but can't see it on the later one?

Re: mystery wheel?

Douglas I have a large book that covers all models from 1930-70. Flicking through the pre war pages, it looks like most models over 250cc have that plate. But of course lots of the pictures are drawings like the last one I posted, and some are photos with shadows. As far as I can tell, all the heavies have that plate. But I wouldn't swear to it. Ron
