I have been asked to make the signs for the Etreham campsite next year. On the 65th I spent days making them from English Oak and English Plywood and they were nearly all stolen as souvenirs by unknown blaggards, so this time I have decided to use military direction signs (modern plastic) on which I will stencil an appropriate DR tour logo.
I think they are a little smaller that the wartime metal version, does anyone have an original?
These will also be stolen Rob...Still OK on the workshop wall as a souvenir..If you want them back afterwards I'll put a note in the tour details requesting they be left in place...Or we could use trip wires and mines... ..
By measuring something of a known size on an M20, which is visible in your photo, you should be able to work out a scale to determine the size of the originals shown....Ian
Ian, these didn't cost to much so if they get lost its not a big deal, but we will try to hopefull save one for your workshop wall like we did last time. Rob
I spy with my little eye something beginning with R, are they rifle brackets Rob ? Now that is something I'm looking for, What's the Griff , Andrew .h.
The repro rifle brackets I bought at the war and peace show, one of the stall holders had a box full of them. I think he was called the El alemain collection.
There could be 200 bikes in Normandy, I'm not making 200 signs, or 400 if everyone wants two
Hopefully you won't all follow me around nicking them as I put them up, as they are there to help new arrivals and the genuinely confused find our camp site all week.
Just a thought, at the end of the tour we could present them as prizes to people who have "excelled" during the tour, perhaps people who have destroyed French cars or been arrested more often than the rest.
Rob, If you're responsible for Traffic Control and Road Signage then you really should get an 'AA Box' attached to the swd Big 4 before next June ! (This one's marked up to 4 Corps Provost)
(Cheers to Jan for the image, slightly different from the more commonly seen version)
