On a Norton laydown gearbox that I am rebuilding the Main Gear Wheel Sleeve Bearing Roller Retaining Washer has 3 notches cut into it. Can anybody tell me if these notches should face the rollers or the Bronze Thrust Washer?

Peter,

As far as I know, these notches are on the bronze thrust washer side.
They are pressed in to be able to deform the gear slightly without getting protrudions on the washer surface itself and supposed to help keep the retainer ring in place, which they do not really do.
