Magneto Oil Seal

I've just purchased a new Oil Seal for the Magneto/Timing Case, but this seal prevents the magneto gear to sit flush in the case, do I need to machine the outer edge of the seal away to accomodate the shoulder of the gear?

Re: Magneto Oil Seal

Hi Julian,

Nothing needs to be machined with the correct oil seal and if inserted correctly to its grove.

The “Neck” of the gear is going through the seal and the crown should not touch it.

Noam.

Re: Magneto Oil Seal

Hi Julian

Is it a modern seal or an original type seal you are using ?

Re: Magneto Oil Seal

Have you fitted the seal with the spring ring facing towards outer timing cover ? if not this will not allow pinion to sit right on mag taper... Dave

Re: Magneto Oil Seal

Feel like a bit of a berk here now, after closer investigation on the timing gear, due to the corrosion it looked like there was a thick shoulder on back of the gear which wouldn't originally budge, after a good clean in paraffin I soon realised that the shoulder was actually the original seal, the new seal now fits beautifully.. Sorry for wasting your time.
