I checked my contact points and they are .020 ". I know it must be .012". Because it is much fiddling to adjust, can I leave it ? The opening of the points are on time (checked with a strobe light)

When you change the gap you also change the ignition timing and quite a bit. See if the points close firmly, if they only lightly touch then you can get an ignition problem. If they close properly I would just leave it as it is.
