question about tire security bolts

Hello

Can someone tell something about tire security bolts. Were they mounted in each wheel in the BSA WM20. I met wheels with and without tire security bolts.

Re: question about tire security bolts

Tomek the security bolts were mostly for off road use where the tyre pressures were kept low to aid grip in mud or sand. I have seen them fitted to both wheels, although I think only really necessary for the driven wheel. However I suppose it's possible for a front tyre to jerk round under extreme conditions. Not really required for road use with proper pressures and modern soft tyres that will cling to the wheel rim. Ron

Re: question about tire security bolts

Norton Big4s had two of them.

Re: question about tire security bolts

I can't find them in any BSA spare parts lists?

They are mentioned in the list of DME circulars.

Re: question about tire security bolts

If you don't use them, what do you do with the hole in the wheel rim?

Re: question about tire security bolts

You could just put a countersunk bolt in to fill the hole

Re: question about tire security bolts

Remember adding or removing safety bolts drastically affects wheel balance so always rebalance. ... or at very least when leaving off safety bolts (which are fairly heavy) check for weights on opposite side of wheel & remove.
forgetting about the balance difference can lead to an alarming wheel bounce at around 50mph.
To run without safety bolts i place a piece of foil slightly bigger than the hole inside the rim held in place with a strip of masking tape, then on the side that shows i hold the rim upright with hole at lowest point & drip epoxy glue into the hole so it slightly goes under the edge (between foil & rim) if you slightly over fill it will dry flat, then touch up with paint.
it's an invisible repair & dust plug.
