Matchless magneto pickup?

I'm about to overhaul a Lucas N1 mag for a WD Matchless which will be for sale after the work is completed. However, I am unsure of the correct pick up type for the wartime N1. Should the HT lead exit vertically from the mag body or does it exit horizontally using the magdyno type pick up. If it is the latter, does the lead exit towards the engine or away from it?...Ian

Ian, both mine are like this! exiting towards the oil tank. Which is correct according to the factory picture on page 98 of O&M. Ron

I agree with Ron, both my G3 and G3L have the horizontal type of pick-up.

PS But to be really sure, you could buy the Lucas guide 1936-1957 Equipment & spares (182 p.) A4.
I do these in repro for € 25 plus P&P.
