Crush drive

Should the crush drive hit up against the engine casing? When I turn the motor the crush drive locks onto the engine casing. I have assembled the drive as per the work shop manual. It seems odd that the drive should make direct contact with the casing.

Re: Crush drive

Nope, shouldn't do that. Have a look at

http://www.petercomley.com/Parts%20Engine.pdf

Plate 2 parts 51 & 52 are spacers to align the engine sprocket with the clutch and distance the cush drive from the cases.

This shows the arrangement for an OHC engine but it's the same for the sidevalves.

Cheers
Pete

Re: Crush drive

Thanks. My parts book did not have distance pieces. I can now see what I need to get.

Re: Crush drive

Hi Bryce,

I think that the reason you do not see part 51, distance piece on your manual,
Is because on some of the models (Not sure if earlier or older..)
This piece was an integral part of the cush drive.

Yes Noam is correct, some models need a spacer. If you have a spare drive side bearing spacer the one that fits between the 2 bearings you can use this and thin it down so that the chain lines up with the clutch chain wheel. Its the right OD and ID just a lot longer.
